MacOS High Sierra: Firewire capture not working

I just bought a old MacBook Pro to digitize my old MiniDV video tapes from my old Sony camera.

(MacBook Pro Mid 2010, 13", Intel Core Duo, MacOS 10.13.6)

I have the camera playing and in QuickTime using its screen capture function I

I see the video from the camera correctly on my Mac. I click record and It captures. But when clicking the stop record button I get an error message that the record did fail and I should try again. I tried with 2 different FireWire cables but error persists.

Also I bought an old version of Final Cut Pro and tried it with this one (logging window). Also not working in this case I get: "while configuring QuickTime with the current recording settings and error occurred. Pls close Final Cut and check hardware settings."

When looking into the system profiler I see under FireWire that the camera has been recognized correctly as Sony DCR-TRV50E.

I also get a looong error log from Final Cut when it crashes after trying to log which I could post here if that would help. Thank you very much for any help!

Hallo MarsonKi,

Du hast dir mit dem MacBook Pro von 2010 und High Sierra wirklich ein sehr passendes Setup für MiniDV-Capture besorgt – dass deine Sony-Kamera im System Profiler korrekt erkannt wird und du sogar ein Live-Bild siehst, zeigt, dass FireWire grundsätzlich funktioniert und du vieles schon richtig gemacht hast.

Wenn die Aufnahme erst beim Stoppen mit einer Fehlermeldung abbricht, liegt das erfahrungsgemäß meist nicht am Kabel, sondern am Aufnahme-Modus (in QuickTime unbedingt „Neue Filmaufnahme“, nicht Bildschirmaufnahme), an falschen DV-Projekteinstellungen in Final Cut oder an einem Speicher-/Formatproblem der Zielfestplatte (ausreichend freier Platz, idealerweise HFS+).

Fazit: Dein Setup ist technisch geeignet, das Problem ist sehr wahrscheinlich konfigurationsbedingt und lösbar – du bist also deutlich näher am Ziel, als es gerade wirkt.

Hallo MarsonKi,

Da dein Mac die Kamera korrekt erkennt und ein Live-Bild ankommt, spricht vieles dafür, dass es am Zusammenspiel der Software liegt.

Ein Downgrade auf Snow Leopard ist technisch verständlich, weil Final Cut Pro 7 ursprünglich für diese Systemgeneration entwickelt wurde und dort erfahrungsgemäß am stabilsten läuft.

Community-Erfahrungen (nicht offiziell, aber verifiziert durch Nutzer):

Erstelle aber vorher unbedingt ein vollständiges Backup und prüfe, dass du auch ein passendes Installationsmedium hast.

Vielen Dank für Deine Hilfe. Ich habe jetzt nochmals "Videoaufnahme" und nicht "Bildschirmaufnahme" getestet aber der Fehler bleibt leider bestehen. Ich werde als nächstes MacOS Snow Leopard auf dem Mac installieren was etwas älter ist und besser mit Final Cut 7 zusammen arbeiten sollte. Oder hast Du noch eine andere Idee?

Achte darauf, dass du mindestens SL 10.6.3 oder 10.6.4 installierst. Das war die Auslieferungsversion des 2019ers. Mit der Startversion (10.6.) wird es nicht funktionieren, ein Downgrade zu machen.
