iPhone Music shows wrong album covers

I have a "Music" collection of exclusively own CDs and own microphone recordings as .mp3 audio files. I added a cover image to the first title of every album to keep the file size of the other titles in the album small. When I "Sync" the complete Mediathek to my iPhone the first time often many album covers are missing, they show the light gray "Music" icon of two eighth notes. A second "Sync" with the same data, corrected this and all my covers (several hundreds) were shown on the "Albums" list correctly, each album showed the image of the first title as intended. I observed another bug: when I add/change a cover image of a title, "Sync" will not recognize that the file has changed. You must change either the title name or something else in the "Information" to update the file on the iPhone. But these are minor bugs, which I can tolerate.

Since my recent iPhone 13 update to 26.3.1. (liquid glass) however, many albums now show a wrong cover image from a different album of my collection, which is totally inappropriate. All "coverless" titles show now the same wrong cover image instead of the "Music" icon. Only albums where all titles have added a cover image (the same for all titles) show the correct image. If I would do that with all my titles it would cost me 1,2 GB additional wasted iPhone memory and many hours of manual editing all the cover images.

The album covers were shown correctly on my MacBook. I then tried recreating the "Music" Library new from my audio files without success. In Music Preferences the option "Coverbilder automatisch aktualisieren" is disabled. After "Sync" the same happens, the bug persists. Since I read here that these cover images have made software problems since years, I think we should name it the "Apple iPhone Cover Image Bug".

I appreciate, that titles without covers were attached covers automatically, but it should be a cover from the same album, and not a random image from another album. Any workaround would be highly welcome.

Hello Bernhard,

since your post is already from March 27, I first wanted to ask whether the issue still exists with newer iOS versions or whether it changed after additional sync attempts or later updates.

You already narrowed the problem down very well — especially the observation that albums with artwork embedded in every track behave correctly, while albums relying on artwork only from the first track show incorrect or random covers after syncing.

Since your Mac library itself still displays the correct artwork, this does indeed sound more like an iPhone-side artwork cache/sync issue rather than damaged MP3 files themselves.

I’d be interested to know whether the issue still behaves the same way today, and whether repeated syncs still partially correct the artwork database as they did before.

Hello Bernhard,

that is good news — and your observation is quite useful.

Since the artwork corrected itself after the iOS update without another sync, it does suggest that the iPhone rebuilt or refreshed some internal media/artwork data during the update. I would still phrase that carefully, because Apple does not document a separate user-accessible “clear Music artwork cache” function on iPhone.

As far as I can see, the practical options are therefore limited to the safer steps: restart the iPhone, remove the affected synced music from the iPhone and sync it again from the Mac, or — if the problem returns more broadly — rebuild the synced music on the iPhone completely.

Since everything is correct at the moment, I would not change too much now. I would first try the next normal sync and see whether the issue actually returns.

Hello PreCognition,

Only three days ago I updated my iPhone to iOS 26.4.2 and to my surprise and to my very delight all the covers were correct again without syncing. I also came to conclusoin that the update must have cleared some disordered cache data. Therefore I still hesitated to make a next sync after I made only minor changes in my music library, fearing that the cache problem could arise again, but I will perform a sync sooner or later. I‘m very grateful that Apple‘s new version solved my problem!

Is there a possibility to clear the cache data without new iOS update?
