External SanDisk SSD randomly disconnects on MacBook Pro (M5 Pro, macOS Tahoe) – works perfectly on Windows
I’m using a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD (2TB) on a MacBook Pro (M5 Pro, macOS Tahoe 26.4.1). The drive is recognized and works normally at first, but after some time it randomly disconnects during use. macOS then shows the message “Disk not ejected properly”.
The issue only occurs on macOS – on a Windows PC the SSD has been running flawlessly for months without a single disconnect. Other external HDD-drives seem to work fine on the MacBook. I’ve tested multiple cables and ports with no difference. It feels like it occoured with the new OS update.
→ At this point it feels more like a macOS compatibility issue than a hardware defect of the SSD.
Setup:
- MacBook Pro (2026) with M5 Pro
- macOS Tahoe 26.4.1
- SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 2TB
- Model: SDSSDE61-2T00
- Serial: 2404CD402473
- File system: exFAT
- Firmware: up to date (checked with SanDisk tool)
Problem:
The SSD mounts and works normally, but after some time it disconnects randomly during active use.
- no standby
- MacBook connected to power
- direct connection (no hub)
What I’ve tested:
- multiple USB-C cables (including original)
- different ports
- latest firmware installed
- tested on Windows → no issues
- tested other drives on Mac → no issues
Questions:
- Are there known compatibility issues between macOS Tahoe and this SSD?
- Are there any macOS settings (power management / USB behavior) that could cause this?
Thanks for any help!
