Repeated "Phone Number Added to This Device" alert with Magenta AT MultiSIM (100% reproducible)
Hi everyone,
I have a fully reproducible issue that neither Apple Support nor my carrier (Magenta Austria) has been able to explain so far.
Configuration
- iPhone 16 (primary eSIM)
- iPhone SE (Magenta MultiSIM eSIM)
- Both running the latest iOS
- Same phone number (Magenta MultiSIM)
- Different Apple IDs (private/business)
- Business iPhone is managed by Microsoft Intune / Microsoft Defender (MDM)
- Wi-Fi Calling disabled on both devices
- "Calls on Other Devices" disabled on both devices
- iMessage and FaceTime disabled on the business iPhone
Alert
The following alert repeatedly appears:
Phone Number Added to This Device
Your phone number is now being used on another device.
Background
The issue started immediately after activating the Magenta MultiSIM.
Troubleshooting already performed
- Reset network settings on both iPhones multiple times.
- Enabled SIM PIN on both eSIMs.
- Apple Support asked Magenta to update the ICCID.
- Magenta completely replaced the MultiSIM with a brand new eSIM (new ICCID).
- The behavior remained exactly the same.
Reproducible tests
1. Business iPhone powered OFF
- Primary iPhone: Airplane Mode ON → OFF
- No alert
2. Business iPhone powered ON
- Business iPhone: Airplane Mode ON → OFF
- Alert appears on the business iPhone
3. Business iPhone powered ON
- Primary iPhone: Airplane Mode ON → OFF
- Alert appears on the primary iPhone
4. Business iPhone powered ON but left in Airplane Mode (no cellular connection)
- Primary iPhone: Airplane Mode ON → OFF
- Alert still appears on the primary iPhone
Observation
The issue only disappears when the second iPhone is completely powered off.
Keeping the second iPhone powered on (even in Airplane Mode) is enough for the alert to appear again. This suggests the alert is not triggered by an active cellular registration of the second device.
At this point, both Apple Support and Magenta have tried to help. Apple suspected an ICCID/eSIM provisioning issue, but even after Magenta replaced the MultiSIM with a completely new eSIM, the behaviour remained unchanged.
Has anyone with a MultiSIM setup (same phone number on two iPhones) experienced the same behaviour?
I’m particularly interested in whether this is expected iOS behavior or a bug related to how iOS handles MultiSIM configurations.
