Subject: Activation Lock removal request – iPad mini (iPad2,7), Apple ID unknown, no proof of purchase

Hello,

I am the owner of an Apple iPad mini (Wi-Fi + Cellular), model identifier iPad2,7, currently running iOS 9.3.6. The device is showing the Activation Lock screen and requesting an Apple ID email and password that I do not know.

I purchased this iPad used, approximately 13 years ago, from a private seller, and I do not have the original receipt or any purchase documentation from that transaction.

The device had been sitting unused for a long time. Recently I charged it, connected it to Wi-Fi, and it worked normally. It only became locked with Activation Lock after I opened the App Store while online — it seems the lock was triggered remotely at that point, possibly because the Apple ID linked to the device had Find My / Lost Mode enabled by its original owner.

I have physical possession of the device and no way to contact the original Apple ID holder. I would like to request assistance with removing Activation Lock. Please let me know what information or documentation I can provide (device serial number, box, or anything else) to help verify ownership.

iPhone 15, iOS 26

Unfortunately, having the iPad, its serial number, or original box isn't enough for Apple to remove Activation Lock.

If the iPad is linked to the previous owner's Apple Account, that person would need to remove it from their account through iCloud.com/find.

Apple also accepts Activation Lock removal requests with proof of purchase, but without that documentation, your options are very limited.

You can find Apple's official instructions here: How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support

One thing worth clarifying: Simply opening the App Store wouldn't normally trigger Activation Lock. That check usually happens during device activation, so I wouldn't assume the previous owner remotely locked it.

If you can't recover the associated Apple Account or provide acceptable proof of purchase, there may unfortunately be no way to reactivate the iPad.
