Backing up to iCloud

I have a Mac (Mini) and an iPad. I purchased Microsoft Office for Macs from Microsoft (purchased not subscribed through Microsoft 365). I save all my Excel and Word files on my Mac to both Documents and iCloud Drive. When I open my Excel and Word files through iCloud.com on my iPad I see that I cannot edit or save them. There is a message saying that I cannot edit them unless I have a subscription to Microsoft 365.

So my question is: why can't I edit and save files on my iPad which I have saved to iCloud Drive on my Mac? In other words, if I have saved them to iCloud Drive why can't I edit and save them on my iPad when I am traveling?

Thank you for your response. It does not seem right though that having spent a few hundred dollars to buy a piece of software from Microsoft to enable me to use Office on my Mac, I also have to pay them a subscription to use the same files on my iPad. I thought that the Mac and the iPad were supposed to seamlessly sync.

Stop the headache and get office for Mac from this link, download it right now

But this pack is for Mac only and like I said before , to work with files on office you have to get an subscription because you can install all office pack but you can just read files no work on it

Ok, but I spent $270 last year on (I think it was called) "Office Home & Business", a piece of software that I bought from Apple (not Microsoft as I said earlier). What does this download do? Should it be downloaded on my Mac or on my iPad? Is it a purchase or a subscription? I'm reluctant to download two similar pieces of software.

You must have a subscription to work with your files from other devices even if they are wires or excel files
