Macbook Pro 16 overheats with Ableton Live 10
I recently bought a Macbook Pro 16" on Catalina (10.15.1) and it gets way too hot, and so the fans way too noisy, with Live 10 Suite
My numbers come from Macs Fan Control, Intel Power Gadget and the activity monitor.
Everything up to date and officially compatible with Catalina, the activity monitor displays normal values, Live doesn’t seem to require much from the dedicated gpu, but even when just opened with nothing loaded, it goes up to 75°c after 15 minutes, then a constant 90°c when listening to a light project (5 tracks, 2 drum racks, 3 Kontakt instancies, a few effects), and the fans start ramping up to a steady and noisy 4500rpm to keep it back to around 85°c, and I can’t really work with it
Now I know it takes a lot to keep an 8 cores cpu cool, but In comparison my 2012 mbp (on Mojave 10.14.6) never gets hotter than 73°c on a heavy load with the fans always silent at 2200rpm, idling around 45°c with just Live opened…30°c difference ?
2 sidetones:
-It’s better without an external sound card (« only » 83°c with the fans always around 3800rpm) and/or an external monitor, but still unusable
-I see very short spikes on the %gpu in the activity monitor (around 55%) every 15 seconds or so, not sure if that’s relevant
Appart from that the computer seems to run fine with other apps like Chrome or Photoshop, although 70°c on a three tracks project in Garage Band seems wrong to me, the guy from the Genius Bar told me it was perfectly normal…
So who do you think is at fault here ? It’s the second 16" mbp I’m trying and having the same results so I would say if it’s the hardware it’s the whole generation, which seems very unlikely
Anyone having similar issues with Catalina or other models ? Do you think I should just wait for an update from Apple or Ableton ?
