Connect by cable MacBook and iMac

I want to connect by cable my MacBook to a iMac. I am doing it by wireless, with screen share, but it gets too slow.

I used to do it with a MacBook Air (2011), but this new MacBook model (2016), apparently does not accept a thunderbolt connection cable. I tried an adapter, but the message is that such connection is not possible.
