See which e-Mail adress was sent to

The suggested solution is far from seamless... actually I think it goes against everything Apple is about.

Exactly, viewing the header of an email and exactly which address the email was sent to needs to be added to the app. I have 6 different accounts and it's not feasible to search through all of them just to see which address an incoming mail was sent to. This is basic, c'mon Apple, fix this limitation.

I've found you can do a 'forward' of the email and see the email it was sent to in the quoted email. You don't need to actually forward the email anywhere, just click the button. Not ideal by any means but a lot easier than checking each individual mailbox.

Switching each individual inbox is NOT the solution, it’s a ******/lazy workaround that involves Apple

doing zero work and zero customer service.

the whole problem is I don’t know which inbox to even check! I don’t know which email it’s sent to! Why should I have to go in to all my inboxes on a treasure hunt? The problem is Apple’s to fix, or we fix it by using another app, or an android phone. Lazy idiots, fix your problems or lose customers.

That is what is does for me as well. When I click on my name, the contact card comes up and the email that was used says ‘recent’.

The same happens when I click on the name of the person receiving my email. I am on

iPadOS 17.3.1.

@chrisky307 This used to work for me too. In the last few weeks or so, it has stopped listing the “recent” tag for some unknown reason. That’s how I found myself here looking for a solution. Has anyone else had this same issue?

This used to be the case, but no longer is available with iOS 17. 😣

Had NO idea this is how you can tell which account an email came into.

”recent” is so simple and generic that I would’ve just assumed it meant SOME mail was received by that account recently — not the specific mail I’m looking at.

This is an awful workaround but try creating a separate contact for each email and adding the email to the company name. I have 10 emails and need to know which email it’s being sent to all the time.

I think I figured it out. When you click on the name and your contact card comes up. The email that received the message will have ‘Recent’ tagged above it in the contact UI.

I found a way that worked great for me. I removed the emails from my contact card. Now it doesn’t say “To Daxin” it just list the email. I know it’s to me!!

I have a solution.

In the Contacts app, remove any email addresses listed on your contact card. Then make a new contact for each of your email addresses, using the email address both as the contact’s first name and in the email field.

This way, you will always see the sent-to email address at the top of every email 🌸

@IIIIIIIIIllll, can I ask you if you are running iOS 17.4 (the most recent update)? Kami's solution, the "recent" thing, worked for me for years, but sometime in the last month or so it quit working for me. I'm just curious if it's a bug with the most recent version(s) of iOS, or if it's something screwy on just my phone locally.

I have just set up my primary iCloud email account plus two aliases. All of the incoming email is tagged as "iCloud". I don't see how to use the workaround for the alias accounts. Is that possible?

You have encountered one of the many limitations of the native iOS/iPadOS Mail App. When you tap the addressee’s name, the associated contact card is opened - and this may have multiple email addresses associated with it - and not the actual email address to which the mail-message was sent.

Unlike many other Mail Apps, the native Mail App doesn’t have a facility to view the raw address header that would easily identify both the sender and recipient email address.

When looking at the All inboxes category, this limitation of the Mail App is compounded - as, by definition, you are looking at all of your configured inboxes.

The only method to have confidence of the recipient email address is to view the inbox of each of your email accounts, one at a time. Your native Mail App will show each account and mailbox independently - as well as the aggregate views of All inboxes, All Drafts, All Archive, All Sent, All Bins etc.

You can enable and disable each of the available mailbox views from the Mail App sidebar. If hidden, tap the sidebar icon at top-left of the Mail App window to expose the sidebar - then tap the Edit button at top-right of the sidebar. You can now enable/disable and re-order the mailbox views to meet you needs. Tap Done when you are finished editing.
