about 2 weeks ago I tried to recover some messages on my iphone that I had recently deleted. I recovered them within 30 days of deleting them and I haven't updated my phone in this time. The recovered messages still don't show up in the imessage chat or the photos section when I click the contact's name.
Why aren't the messages showing back up, and will they show up eventually?

I agree with the OP. The same thing is happening to me with iOS 16.5.1. The recovery procedure is quite simple to follow, yet messages do not return to the ‘messages’ list; they just disappear from the ‘recently deleted’ list. The workaround (for me) is to look at messages on a second device, where the recovered messages DO show up. Seems like a refresh issue with the first device.
Sure. I just happened to glance at my iPad a few minutes later and the recovered message was there. I opened it and deleted it a second time. It never did show up on my phone. I am able to produce the same effect with other messages.

I followed the steps Apple Support steps to recover some "Recently Deleted" messages from today but they have not re-appeared yet. Now the messages don't appear in either my messages list OR in my "Recently Deleted" list. Restarting my iPhone did not help. Very frustrating.
Can I ask what other device the messages showed up on? i've been trying to find them on my macbook and they dont show up there either
