Need to point Garageband to external hard drive

Running a Mac Pro, have not used garageBand in forever. Used to have all my GarageBand and Soundtrack Pro Apple loops on an external hard drive. Has Apple ever figured out a simple way to do this? If not, does anyone have a clear set of instructions (I'm assuming having to use Terminal) to point Garageband to my external drive?
