Unable to disable iMessage on child’s phone.

I have a phone for my child, iPhone 7 running iOS 15.8.2

He has a sim with no data plan, just text and phone. Unfortunately this means that he cannot use iMessage unless connected to WiFi.

i want to turn off iMessage because otherwise it will try to use iMessage to message me rather than plain on SMS, however the switch to turn iMessage on and off on his phone is disabled.

I can’t see anything about iMessage in Family view on my iPhone (iPhone 13 iOS 17.4.1).

How do I disable iMessage on my child’s iPhone?

Do you have parental controls set up that are preventing you from changing this setting? You can check that here: Use parental controls on your child's iPhone and iPad - Apple Support

Make sure the device is connected to the internet (mobile data or Wi-Fi) when trying to toggle off iMessage, restart the device, and see if that works.
