studio max with int 8 tb storage or split int and ext?

We have over 200,000 pictures. And currently have 12 year old 27 in iMac and want to move to new studio max with 27 in Mac display. We had Drobo but eventually had trouble so moved all pictures to other external storage devices. Need help deciding about all storage on studio max vs 1/2 int vs 1/2 ext.

iPhone X, iOS 14

This is especially true in the case of data stored on the internal drive of

  • Any Apple-Silicon-based Mac
  • Any Intel-based Mac with an Apple T2 security chip

Those Macs encrypt all – or nearly all – of the contents of their internal SSDs in real-time. Even if the SSD isn't soldered in (which they often are), if the motherboard dies and you no longer have access to the proper keys to decrypt the contents of the SSD, good luck salvaging any data off of it.

The incredible SPEED of the boot drive (internal storage) on the Mac Studio comes with en equally incredible Price Tag.

One rule of thumb should be to buy enough expensive internal storage to do all the Edits you might want without waking for the drive(s). Then move all the files you need only from time to time to less expensive storage, possibly even multiple tiers such as some SSDs for rapid access, some Rotating Magnetic drives for slow but steady access at a much lower price.
