I don't know how to reproduce it, it has shown up as small tab and I can't get rid of it. I'm not surf this is associated with bookmarks or not, or with "new empty tab group". I just can't get rid of it and I would like to learn how to prevent it coming back.. Thanks for any help!

Well, I got help from Apple, what I do is Control click on the icon itself, then that brings up a choice of "Pin" or "Un-Pin", then I click "Un-Pin" and away it goes.
i still don't know what causes that gremlin but it's probably me hitting the wrong button or combination of keys.
If you are referring to the sidebar, click the Hide Sidebar button. See red arrow below:
