Why is the notes app deleting my notes?

Notes i had written years ago are gone. In fact the notes i do have dont even go that far back. If there is a limit on notes why was i never notified about this? Like youve reached your limit on notes and starting a new one will replace and old one? That wouldve made sense. Is it possible that they were just converted to a word document and stored somewhere else?
