AirPods keep reverting to "Connect to this Mac, Automatically"

My AirPods keep automatically connecting to my mac and iPad, when they are already connected to my iPhone. I have changed the Bluetooth settings on my mac and iPad numerous times from Connect to this Mac, "Automatically" to "When last connected to this Mac". Yet the setting keeps reverting to Automatically. This is beyond frustrating. How do I stop this from happening?
