Experiencing extreme AirPods latency on MacOS

Since I bought my AirPods a year ago I have experienced extreme latency when connecting to my MacBook. I have since switched from a late 2017 MacBook Pro to a MacBook Air 2020 but I still have the same issues. When I play music or a video, my AirPods will receive audio 1-2 seconds after I clicked. This makes videos and movies completely unwatchable. On my iPhone and Apple Watch they connect just fine and there is no latency at all, it seems to be an issue with MacOS (yes I am one the latest version and have been continuously for the past 16 months of owning AirPods).

Has anybody else experienced these issues?
