iPod Classic 120GB - how to reset and delete without iTunes?

I want to sell my old iPod Classic 120GB to a collector and make sure that no old data is on the device. iTunes does not install on my MacBook Air and says it needs an older Mac OS. The iPod just resets (pressing Menu and Middle Button for a few seconds) but does not give me the option to erase everything under Settings. Just Reset.

And it shows 0kB free which makes me believe I used it as hard drive in the past. But my Mac does not recognise it as a hard drive either.

Please help. Any suggestions?

Hello Christian,

what’s your MacOS Version, is the iPod showing up as iPod in Finder, or is it even recognised when looking in the system report?

Hi Apfeldenker,

my MacOS is Big Sur 11.7.4 - when I connect the iPod to my Mac it says 'Verbunden - Vorm Trennen mit iTunes auswerfen' but it does not show in Finder on my Mac nor does iTunes install on my Mac due to the too high OS version.

Heureka :-) I now checked the System report and the iPod shows up as external 120GB hard drive. But I cannot do anything with it, no reaction when I click on it.

I only want to make sure that there is no data on that iPod before I sell it.

You won't believe it. Now after having the iPod connected for a while it shows up in Finder :-)

I guess I can now delete the data.

Somehow it still does not work. The iPod shows up in Finder with Name and 'Loading Software...' that takes forever and results in an error message on screen and the iPod to reset. I am at no point able to access the files and manipulate files or name of the iPod or reset it to factory settings including deletion of content.
