Non existing Folder in new Time Machine Backups

Hello together,

since a few weeks, I am using Time Machine. I am backing up my MacBook and my external SSD.

A few days ago I formatted my SSD. Since then Time Machine shows my new and formatted SSD in the history but also the old version of the SSD.

Now I have basically two backups of my SSD, one old version and one new version. The problem is that the old backup of the SSD uses 120GB of disk space on my backup disk with each new backup. How can I remove the old SSD "Extreme Pro 1" from future backups?

Thank you in advance

Colin

Hello!

We're grateful for your participation in the Apple Support Community.

To exclude a specific volume from Time Machine backups, you can follow these steps:

Open Time Machine preferences from your Menu Bar (look for the clock-like icon) or from System Preferences.

Click on the "Options" button.

In the new window, click on the plus "+" button.

Navigate to your "Extreme Pro 1" SSD in the dialog box and click on the "Exclude" button.

However, it seems that you want to delete the old backups of the SSD from the Time Machine, which is a bit more complicated because Apple does not officially support or recommend modifying Time Machine backups due to the potential for data loss or corruption.

But if you really need to delete the old backups, you can try the following steps:

Enter Time Machine via the menu bar icon.

Navigate to the backup that contains the old backup of your SSD.

Select the SSD.

Click the action (gear) button in the Finder toolbar, then select "Delete All Backups of [your SSD's name]."

Please remember that deleting backups can lead to permanent data loss, so make sure you have any needed files safely stored elsewhere.

It's also worth noting that Time Machine manages the space on the backup drive automatically. When the drive is full, it will start to delete the oldest backups. If your backup drive has enough space, you might not need to manually delete the old backups of the SSD.
