Apple Music App gets worse and worse with every update ... seriously!

I am writing in English as I would hope that more users are observing the "recent developments" as regards the Apple Music App, which becomes worse and worse with every update, adding more bugs instead of fixing them!

I have recently updated to mac OS Golden Gate, just to state that things are actually getting worse instead of better!

Here's an overview:

  • Modifier keys when deleting tracks, including a confirmation dialogue: previously a user would select one or more tracks from the library, hit Alt + Cmd + Backspace and would be confronted with a dialogue whether the track shall be (physically) deleted or kept. The latter is specifically useful when a library gets corrupted and a track is howing up twice or more often, even though it is the exact same (physical) file. Selecting the option to keep that file will only delete it from the library's database, but not the disk. Meanwhile I found out that a user has to firstly click Alt + Backspace in order to get a first dialogue whether the user is sure to delete the track. When confirming the already known dialogue shows. I wonder why developers have added an addditional (and totally obsolete) dialogue here, let alone the hassle to find out how it works now!
  • No auto-scrolling when dragging files: in previous versions it was possible to select a number of tracks in a playlist and drag them as a group up or down in that playlist. If the playlist was larger (not fitting in the app window) and thus showing a scrollbar the scrollbar would follow the drag direction so that the user can actually drop the tracks where they should go. This very basic behaviour was removed ... why, for heaven's sake?! Right now one can only drag within the boundaries of the app window and needs to scroll up or down ... especially with long playlists this is an absolute pain in the neck!!
  • Info not updating: in previous versions the info bar (which is now on the top left of the window, making room for the "fancy" play bar ... why?!) would immediately update from showing the number of tracks in the playlist to only showing the number of tracks selected. Also this behaviour was removed ... and again I wonder if programmers are instructed to make things worse isntead of better!
  • Multitude of tracks added to playlist: when dragging a number of tracks to a playlist, that group of tracks is added as many times as there are tracks in the selection (i.e. a group of 10 tracks is added 10 times!) ... are you kidding me?!
  • Instability: overall the app got more instable and freezes very often.

Overall, there might be more bugs and shortcomings and I am happy to update this thread, but it would be interesting to know 1) if there are other users observing the same issues and 2) what Apple intends to do about these super annoying bugs!

Please feel free to add more bugs/shortcomings.

Cheers,

Georg

The part that stands out to me is the tracks being added multiple times. Adding 10 selected tracks should not result in 100 entries. I’d try the same thing with a new empty playlist. If it happens there too, that points more toward a Music app bug than a damaged playlist.

Apple’s current macOS 27 Music guide still documents dragging tracks to reorder a playlist, and the current keyboard shortcuts for deleting tracks have changed. → Keyboard shortcuts in Music on Mac - Apple Support

As for what Apple intends to fix, nobody here can really answer that. I’d report each reproducible issue through Apple’s Music feedback page, especially the duplicate additions and freezes:

For bug reports, exact steps that reproduce the problem are usually much more useful than a general complaint.

George,

indeed, the modifier keys have changed. I suspect, it has been done to make the integration with the iCloud music library easier.

It is a bit complicated, because there are three different kinds of deletion:

  • remove the download of the song, but keep the song in the library and the playlists
  • remove the song from the playlist, but keep the download and the song in the library
  • delete the song from the library.

And the existing shortcuts have been inconsistent with the delete and remove options in other apps, for example Photos.

When I now look at the menu for songs, no shortcuts are shown at all. I take it, this is invitation to assign our own shortcuts.

And the scrolling is slow as molasses when dragging songs in a playlist, but I can drag them farther than the height of the window. Perhaps because I have set the scrollbars to be visible at all times.

I have not seen the other issues you are reporting.

Here in the German communities you might get more replies when posting in German.

Gut zu wissen:

  1. alle Nutzer:innnen hier sprechen sehr gut deutsch
