OS Compatibility

I almost bought an SE 2nd Gen today but the guy in the shop noticed I have an iPhone 8S and said that the watch will soon become incompatible with the phone when the watch's OS is up-issued. Does anyone know if this is true? Are Apple forcing people to upgrade their phones to be able to continue using their watch?

The next version of watchOS (watchOS 10) will be only compatible with iPhones with iOS17. iPhone 8 wil not be support iOS17.

You (and I, I have the same configuration) should not upgrade to watchOS 10.

In addition to Apple Watch Series 4 or later, to run ‌watchOS 10‌, users will also need an iPhone capable of running iOS 17. This includes the ‌iPhone‌ XS or later and ‌iPhone‌ XR or later.
