iPad 1 (A1337) cannot be activated after a successful restore in 2026 – Has anyone found a solution?

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone here has experienced this issue or knows what’s going on because I’m completely out of ideas.

I have an original iPad 1st generation (A1337, Wi-Fi + 3G) that I’ve owned since it was new. It has a lot of sentimental value to me, and until recently it was working perfectly.

Background

The iPad had been jailbroken for many years. I recently decided to restore it to factory settings because I wanted to remove the jailbreak and return it to a completely stock Apple firmware.

The restore completed successfully through iTunes/Finder, so there should be absolutely no trace of the jailbreak left.

However, after the restore, the iPad has never been able to activate again.

Device Information

  • Model: iPad 1 (A1337)
  • iOS: 5.1.1 (9B206) – latest official firmware
  • IMEI: Verified
  • Serial Number: ***
  • Baseband Firmware: iOS 5.1.1 (9B206)

The IMEI, serial number and baseband are all detected correctly, so it doesn’t appear to be a baseband failure.

Repair History

Some time ago, I replaced the entire 30-pin dock connector assembly because the charging port had failed.

Only the dock assembly (charging connector, flex cable, microphone, etc.) was replaced.

The logic board has never been replaced or modified.

The iPad worked perfectly after that repair.

Everything I’ve already tried

  • Restoring with Finder on macOS
  • Restoring with Apple Devices on Windows
  • Restoring with iTunes
  • Recovery Mode restore
  • DFU Mode restore
  • Multiple USB cables
  • Multiple USB ports
  • Different Windows PCs
  • Different Macs
  • Different Internet connections

The restore always completes successfully.

The iPad boots normally to the Hello screen, but activation always fails.

Finder simply says:

“There was a problem with your iPad.”

Apple Devices says:

“An unknown error occurred. Disconnect the device and reconnect it later.”

No error codes such as 9, 4013, etc. are ever shown.

Additional Information

The activation servers appear to be online (albert.apple.com responds normally with HTTP 403, which is expected from a browser).

The iPad is not Activation Locked, was never reported lost or stolen, and was working normally immediately before I restored it.

My Question

Has anyone successfully activated an iPad 1 (A1337) in 2026 after a clean restore?

If so:

  • What software did you use?
  • Finder?
  • Apple Devices?
  • An older version of iTunes?
  • Legacy iOS Kit?
  • Something else?

I’ve also seen several recent reports of older 32-bit Apple devices (iPad 1/2/3, iPhone 4, etc.) failing activation after a restore, so I’m wondering whether Apple has silently changed something on the activation servers.

At this point, I’m trying to determine whether this is:

  • a hardware issue,

  • a server-side activation problem,

  • or something specific to the A1337 model.

Any help, suggestions, or confirmation from someone who has successfully activated one recently would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi there!

This activation issue on the iPad 1 (iOS 5.1.1) occurs because the system uses outdated network protocols and certificates that can no longer communicate properly with modern versions of Finder or the Apple Devices app. Since it cannot complete the current security protocols, the server rejects the connection and prevents you from getting past the setup screen. To fix this, you need to force the activation using software from that same era.

Follow these steps to resolve it:

  • Get a computer (a PC or an older Mac) that has a classic version of iTunes installed (ideally iTunes 12.6 or earlier).
  • Connect the iPad to the computer using the 30-pin cable and open iTunes.
  • Put the iPad into Recovery Mode: press and hold the Home button and the Top button simultaneously until you see the connect to iTunes screen on the iPad.
  • When iTunes prompts you with a warning that there is a problem with the device, select Restore.
  • Allow the process to finish. By using an older version of iTunes, the original activation "handshake" should process without errors.

For more details, here are the official Apple resources on how to use recovery mode: If you can't update or restore your iPad - Apple Support and what to do if you can't activate your device: If you can't activate your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular) - Apple Support
