I am stuck in Gmail. cannot shut down, quit mail etc. I tried to print a mail (attached in another mail) and even though the print or cancel buttons allow me to click, neither do anything. Nothing in my print queue and no other apps open

Maybe there’s a window that prevents you from doing anything else. You can try moving windows and so on to find it. A more direct and simple action consist in killing the Mail app : Press the following keys :
Command + Option + ESC
A window will appear with the current apps open. Select Mail and press the « Force Quit » Button
