macos deleted my chatgpt Atlas

I had Atlas installed on my Mac mini for months. Two days ago when I opened a pop up message said it was a malware and deleted it. I went back to OpenAI's website and downloaded it again and MacOS deleted the installer and gave me the same message. See attached please.

I need a solution for this error

P.S The print says : Malware Blocked and Moved to

Trash

The app Install_ChatGPT_Atlas.dmg was not

opened because it contains malware. Your

Mac was not harmed.

Hello Matiello11,

Welcome to the Apple Support Community! Here we are Apple users helping other Apple users, sharing solutions and experiences to try to resolve issues.

The message “Malware Blocked and Moved to Trash” on macOS is generated by Apple’s built-in security system (Gatekeeper / XProtect). It means macOS is actively preventing the app from running because it cannot verify it as safe or properly notarized.

Since this is happening even after re-downloading, the most likely cause is:

  • The installer is still being flagged by macOS security
  • Or the downloaded file is not properly signed/notarized
  • Or the download source is not being trusted by macOS security checks

✔️ What you should do first

  • Make sure you are downloading ONLY from the official OpenAI website
  • Delete the current .dmg from Trash and Downloads
  • Restart your Mac mini
  • Download again using Safari (to avoid corrupted downloads from other browsers)

✔️ If it still gets blocked

Check this path:

System Settings → Privacy & Security

If the installer is legitimate, macOS may show an option like:

“Open Anyway”

⚠️ Only proceed if you are 100% sure the file came from the official OpenAI website.

✔️ Important

macOS is designed to block applications like this when they cannot be verified. There is no recommended or safe way to bypass this protection.

If the warning continues even with fresh downloads from the official source, it strongly suggests:

  • The installer version is not currently notarized for macOS
  • Or Apple’s security system is still flagging it for safety reasons

In this case, the safest option is to wait for an updated installer from the developer.

⚠️ About the “Malware Blocked and Moved to Trash” message on macOS

What you are seeing is usually related to Gatekeeper or Apple’s built-in malware protection system (XProtect).

macOS can automatically block and remove apps or installers if they are detected as potentially harmful or if the security signature cannot be verified correctly.

Since this happened with the installer file Install_ChatGPT_Atlas.dmg, it may indicate:

A corrupted or incomplete download

An outdated installer

A security-signing issue detected by macOS

Or a non-official installer source

🔍 First important verification

Please make sure you downloaded the app only from the official OpenAI website:

OpenAI Official Website

Avoid downloading installers from mirrors, ads, or third-party websites.

📲 What to try now

Delete the installer currently in Trash 🗑️

Restart your Mac mini 🔁

Download a fresh copy again directly from the official website using Safari if possible

After downloading:

Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security

If macOS blocked the app, you may see an option near the bottom saying:

“Open Anyway”

Only use this if the installer was downloaded from the official OpenAI source.

🛡️ Why macOS does this

Apple’s security system scans downloaded applications for known malware signatures and notarization issues.

Official Apple explanation:

Safely open apps on your Mac

⚠️ Important

If the warning keeps appearing even after downloading from the official website, do not disable macOS security protections globally.

This could indicate:

A temporary false positive

A damaged download cache

Or an installer issue currently being investigated

🧹 Additional step that may help

Clear the previous installer completely:

Finder → Trash → Empty Trash

Then also remove the old DMG from Downloads before downloading again.

🛠️ If the issue continues

You may need to contact:

OpenAI Support

and include:

The exact macOS version

The screenshot of the warning

The installer filename

Whether the app worked previously on the same Mac
