HomePod stereo pair config fails

Hi,

I’m using two HomePods in a stereo configuration. During the last couple of months, this pairing got broken apart numerous times for no obvious reasons. Resetting both speakers and re-pairing them always created the same error. While setting up the second HomePod, the set-up would not complete, the overlay would just not disappear, while in the meantime both HomePods appear as grouped in the Home app on my iPhone – clearly visible in the background.

Now, sometimes, one of the speakers is quieter than the other one or simply stops working all together. Meanwhile, iTunes on macOS shows two sets of grouped HomePods – one set is not accessible though, resulting in an "unknown error 9039".

Any help is greatly appreciated. Newest software on all devices (HomePods, iPhone XS Max and MacBook Pro)

Does your wireless router/access point support multiple channels, e.g. both 2.4 & 5GHz radios? Setting things up may go better if there is only one active channel, and any options for wireless or client isolation are disabled. It might also help to give the devices unique names, e.g. Wohnzimmer - L & Wohnzimmer - R before you try to create the stereo pair.
