Stop MacBook from booting when pressing touchpad

Hi everyone!

I don't want my MacBook to boot when pressing the touchpad or any keys beside the actual on/off button. Is there a possibility or setting for that?

Thanks in advance!

I apologize for the inconvenience. If the previous method didn't work for you, here's another approach you can try to disable the boot-on-keypress feature on your MacBook:

  • Turn off your MacBook completely.
  • Turn it back on, and immediately press and hold the Command (⌘) and R keys together to boot into Recovery Mode. Release the keys when you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe.
  • Once in Recovery Mode, you'll see the macOS Utilities window. From the top menu bar, click on "Utilities" and then select "Terminal" to open a Terminal window.
  • In the Terminal window, type the following command and press Enter:
nvram AutoBoot=%00

  • Close the Terminal and restart your MacBook by clicking on the Apple logo in the top-left corner of the screen and selecting "Restart."

This method should disable the boot-on-keypress feature. If you want to enable it again in the future, follow the same steps but use the following command in Terminal instead:

nvram AutoBoot=%03

If the issue still persists, it could be a firmware or hardware-related issue, and you may need to contact or visit an Apple Store for further assistance.

I hope this helps!

Hello!

Yes, there is a setting to disable the boot-on-keypress feature on your MacBook. To prevent your MacBook from booting when pressing the touchpad or any keys besides the power button, you can disable the "autoboot" feature by using Terminal.

Here's how to do it:

  • Open the Terminal application on your MacBook. You can find it in the Applications > Utilities folder or by searching for it using Spotlight (press Command+Space and type "Terminal").
  • Copy and paste the following command into the Terminal window:
sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00

  • Press Enter. You will be prompted to enter your admin password (the password you use to log in to your MacBook). Type your password and press Enter again. Note that your password will not be visible as you type it.
  • Close Terminal.
sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03

This command will re-enable the autoboot feature. Remember to restart your MacBook after making these changes to ensure they take effect.

I hope this helps!

Hey there!

Thanks for your quick answer! Unfortunately that didn't worked out for me. I followed the steps you described, rebooted my Mac two times an in both cases it started booting again by wracking touchpad/space. Is there an alternative way to I could try out?

PS: Thanks for your advice! Next time I'll post my questions in the English community!

Kind Regards!
