EMERGENCY: User Folder Name changed - all settings and folders of user removed

Hi guys,

I changed the name of my user account folder and suddenly my whole user settings and folders have been moved to a folder with the old name and the account has been moved to a new, empty account folder. How can I get my old account back? I have already tried to create a new user based on that folder, as suggested in this article: Restore a deleted user on Mac - Apple Support

Somehow, the uption "Use existing folder" does not appear, when trying to create a new user. Hope someone understands my issue and can help me out

Hello!

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Community. This sounds like a serious issue, but let's try to work through it:

I. Before doing anything else, back up any data you can still access. Use Time Machine or copy it to an external hard drive.

II. You could try manually renaming the folder back to its original name. Here's how:

  • Restart your Mac in Safe Mode (hold down the Shift key while rebooting).
  • Once in Safe Mode, navigate to your User folder (/Users/) and try renaming the folder back to its original name.
  • Reboot the computer normally.

III. Go to System Preferences -> Users & Groups. Make sure your account is pointing to the right folder in the “Advanced Options”.

IV. If you have a Time Machine backup or another type of backup from before the name change, consider restoring from that.

V. If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it might be time to seek help from a professional, especially if your data is crucial.

Remember for the future: changing the name of system folders, especially user folders, can lead to complications. Always make sure to back up data before making significant changes to your system.
