Persistent ventura wallpaper process causing MacBook to overheat and drain battery

Hello Apple Community,

I've been experiencing a recurring issue with my MacBook for about the last two months, specifically related to the Ventura wallpaper process. I've noticed that my MacBook becomes significantly slow and the fans start spinning loudly whenever this issue arises. A closer look at the Activity Monitor reveals that the Ventura wallpaper process is consuming an excessive amount of resources (please refer to the attached screenshot).

Force quitting the process temporarily resolves the issue, leading to a cooler and faster performing device. However, the process restarts automatically after some time.

This issue is particularly frustrating when I'm on the go, as my MacBook can drain the entire battery within half an hour if this process is running. I've tried setting a static image as my wallpaper, avoiding dynamic or video wallpapers, but the problem persists.

My MacBook's specifications are: 16-inch, 2021 M1 Max model with 64 GB RAM, a 10-core CPU, and a 32-core GPU, currently running macOS Sonoma 14.2.1.

Has anyone experienced similar issues or does anyone have a solution? I don't use dynamic or video wallpapers and have already set a static image as my wallpaper, but the problem still hasn't been resolved. I'm reaching out for any help or suggestions, as this issue is becoming quite frustrating.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.2

Hi immero,

I understand the frustration you're facing with the Ventura wallpaper process causing performance issues on your MacBook. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

1. Update macOS:

Ensure that your macOS is up to date. Apple releases updates to address bugs and improve system stability. Go to "Apple menu" > "System Preferences" > "Software Update" and check for any available updates.

2. Reset Wallpaper:

Try resetting your wallpaper settings to the default. Go to "Apple menu" > "System Preferences" > "Desktop & Screen Saver." Choose a different wallpaper and see if the issue persists.

3. Check Wallpaper Source:

Verify the source of your wallpaper. If it's a third-party app or a dynamic wallpaper causing the problem, consider switching to a standard Apple-provided wallpaper temporarily to see if the issue persists.

4. Safe Mode:

Boot your MacBook in Safe Mode. This can help identify if the issue is related to third-party software. Restart your MacBook and hold down the "Shift" key until you see the login window. Check if the problem persists in Safe Mode.

5. Activity Monitor:

Use Activity Monitor to inspect the Ventura process further. Check for any associated processes or apps that might be triggering it. Look for patterns or correlations with other activities.

6. Terminal Command:

Open Terminal and try running the following command to restart the WindowServer process, which may help in refreshing the desktop environment:

sudo killall -HUP WindowServer

Enter your admin password when prompted.

7. Reset NVRAM/PRAM:

Resetting the non-volatile random-access memory (NVRAM) or parameter RAM (PRAM) can sometimes resolve display-related issues. Restart your MacBook and hold down "Option-Command-P-R" until you hear the startup sound twice.

8. Contact Apple Support:

If the issue persists after trying the above steps, it might be worthwhile to contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store. There could be a deeper issue that requires professional assistance.

Remember to back up your important data before attempting any troubleshooting steps. If the problem persists, professional assistance from Apple Support may be the best course of action.

Good luck!

Greetings
