Windows in Mission Control extremely small or not visible after disconnecting an external monitor

**MBA M2, 13'', 8 GB, Sonoma**

Recently I am having the following issue: I work with an external monitor and everything is fine. But from time to time I have to disconnect it and move somewhere else in my apartment to work only on my laptop without any external device connected to it. Every time I disconnect the external monitor and use "Mission Control" to switch between apps, the apps windows are extremely small and almost not visible.

This issue is persistent, just the size of the icons varies. Two days ago I had the issue that the windows of the opened applications were disappearing completely in the background with Mission Control, as if I had an empty desktop.

Here is an example: https://ibb.co/FWqmgpb

I googled everywhere but couldn't find any solution. Does someone know why this happens and how to fix it?

Restarting my MacbookAir solves the issue, but this is not a real long term solution.

Thanks

Hi georgise165,

It seems like you are encountering a display issue with Mission Control on your MacBook Air after disconnecting an external monitor. This could be related to how macOS handles screen resolutions and window management when switching between displays. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1.Reset Mission Control:

  • Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Mission Control.
  • Uncheck the option "Displays have separate Spaces" if it's checked.
  • Check the option again to re-enable it.
  • Close System Preferences and see if the issue is resolved.

2.Reset Display Preferences:

  • Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Displays.
  • Select the "Default for display" option to reset the display settings.
  • If you have multiple displays, make sure to select the correct one before resetting.

3.Reset Dock and Desktop:

  • Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Dock.
  • Check the option "Automatically hide and show the Dock" if it's unchecked.
  • Uncheck the option if it's already checked and then check it again.
  • Close System Preferences and check if the issue persists.

4.Check Display Arrangement:

  • Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Displays.
  • Click on the "Arrangement" tab and make sure the displays are arranged correctly.
  • Drag and arrange the displays if needed and check if it helps.

5.Update macOS:

Make sure your MacBook Air is running the latest version of macOS. Check for updates in System Preferences > Software Update.

6.Reset NVRAM/PRAM:

  • Shut down your MacBook Air.
  • Turn it on and immediately press and hold Option + Command + P + R keys.
  • Keep holding the keys until you hear the startup sound for the second time and then release them.
  • Check if the issue is resolved after resetting NVRAM/PRAM.

If the issue persists after trying these steps, you may want to consider contacting Apple Support for further assistance, as it could be a more specific hardware or software-related issue with your MacBook Air.

Good luck!

Greetings
