MacBook Pro display cracked after tiny metal splinter was attracted to magnetic lid edge

Hi everyone,

40 DAYS ago I purchased a 16-inch MacBook Pro.

While closing the lid, a tiny metal splinter, roughly the size of a pinhead, was attracted to the magnetic edge of the lid. It became trapped between the display and the body of the MacBook, and the display cracked.

The internal display now shows no image, it's broken.

I understand Apple advises users not to leave any material between the display and the top case when closing a MacBook,I did not.

In this case the object was not intentionally placed there; it seems to have been retained by the magnetic edge of the laptop itself.

Has anyone experienced something similar with small metallic debris being attracted to the magnetic closing area of a MacBook? If so, how did Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider classify the repair, accidental damage, warranty issue, or any type of goodwill exception?

I men, I am not trying to misrepresent the incident.

I am trying to understand whether there are similar cases and what documentation I should bring to Apple Support.

Thank you.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 26.5

Hello!

MacBooks use powerful magnets along the edges to secure the lid and activate sleep mode, which can occasionally attract small metallic debris without the user noticing. Since the screen breakage was caused by the pressure of an external object when closing the lid, Apple technicians generally classify this type of incident as accidental damage. Therefore, the repair is usually not covered by the one-year limited warranty, and the cost of the service will depend directly on whether you have active AppleCare+ coverage.

To handle your case in the best possible way, please follow these steps:

  • Gather your documentation: Prepare your original invoice or purchase receipt, your ID, and make sure you know your Apple Account password. You do not need to bring proof of how it happened, as the technician will assess the physical damage directly.
  • Back up your data: Since the screen is broken, try connecting your MacBook Pro to an external monitor and back up your data using Time Machine before handing it in.
  • Request a physical inspection: Initiate a service request so that a technician at a Genius Bar or an Apple Authorized Service Provider can inspect the device firsthand; only they can provide you with the final classification and an exact quote.

Best regards!
