Photos not visible in Photos but still on iphoto

Hi there - I used to use Aperture, then had to move to iPhoto and since have been encouraged to use Photos, and I have a 2TB iCloud plan.

Looking at Photos, I have just noticed that all of my pictures from around 2015 are no longer visible in the app on all of my devices. I became a little worried, as I treasure these memories and have no awareness of what the backup might be.

However when I took a look at the iPhoto application on my Mac, and they are still there (phew!). I was of the understanding that these two programs use the same library, so can anyone explain what the problem might be? Why can iPhoto see these pics from 2015 and Photos can not?

Where is your iPhoto Library stored?

  • Launch iPhoto, then ctrl-click (or right-click) the title "iPhoto" in the iPhoto window. You will see a drop down menu, showing you the enclosing folder of the iPhoto Library.
  • Launch Photos, then check the location of of your Photos Library. You can see the location of the Photos Library, if you open the Photos > Preferences > General. The path is shown at the top of the Preferences panel.

Are your Photos Library and the iPhoto Library in the same folder? If not, Photos may not have migrated the same iPhoto Library as iPhoto is currently using. In that case check, if the volume, where you are keeping the iPhoto Library is compatible with Photos for Mac. If your library is on an external volume, the volume must not have been used for Time Machine backups, and the format of volume needs to be MacOS Extended (Journaled).

If your iPhoto Library is on a compatible volume, try to open it in Photos.

  • Quit iPhoto, if it is running.
  • Quit Photos, if it is running.
  • Drag the iPhoto Library onto the Photos icon in the Dock and wait. When Photos opens, are the missing photos from 2015 visible?
