Graphic driver crashes and kernel panics after setup of macOS 2020-002 security update (running macOS 10.13 on an MBP 15" early 2011)

Hi everyone,

as far as I've searched this forum, the topic is known by now, but there seems to be no solution thus far?

Issue:

1. macOS is freezing / kernel panicking and restarting within minutes when starting any software that uses hardware graphics acceleration while being on battery (applies to games, but also Skype, Zoom, Teams etc.
2. when connected to the power supply, the said apps start but have a good chance to crash the graphics driver within 30 mins after launch, causing distorted displays that disappear once you quit the app.

Potential cause:

1. the issues appeared after installing security update 2020-002 which seems to have bugged graphics drivers.

This is a major pain in the a** in the current situation where pretty much half of the work is being done in video conferences!
