Boot macOS on MacBook Air M2 from Linux external drive

Hey,

I would like to boot an operating system (Linux) from an external drive (USB drive). I followed the instructions to press the start button while booting to get to the screen, where I could choose the start up device. Unfortunately, my boot devices are not listed there.

It worked with other MacBooks before. Can someone help to fix this problem? To boot from other devices is a crucial feature for my work. If this does not work, I would have to buy another laptop.
