Adding hidden Folder to Time Machine Exclude Path not possible anymore

Hi

Since Ventura it is no longer possible (without a workaround) to exclude hidden files/path from TimeMachine. If you go to the TimeMachine settings and add a folder to the exclusion it wont show anything hidden. And you cant change that. Even if you go to the finder and activate "show hidden files".

for example, if you want to exclude something inside your ~/Library/Application Support/ folder. you have to add the Library to your Finder favorites. This way it will be displayed in the add folder context menue.

i hope they fix the "open folder" context menue...

Yes, with the changes in the macOS Ventura, it has become harder to exclude hidden files or folders directly from Time Machine's preferences. However, you can still exclude them using a Terminal command. Here's a workaround that you can use:

  • Launch Terminal on your Mac (you can find it in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder or by searching for it using Spotlight).
  • Type the following command, but don't press Enter yet:

sudo tmutil addexclusion -p

  • Now, locate the hidden file or folder you want to exclude in Finder.
  • With hidden files visible, drag and drop the hidden file or folder you want to exclude onto the Terminal window. This will automatically fill in the path to the file or folder in the Terminal command.
  • Press Enter. You will be prompted to enter your administrator password to execute the command with root privileges.
  • Type your password and press Enter again. The command will now run, and the specified hidden file or folder will be excluded from Time Machine backups.
